Target Corporation is an American retail company founded in 1902, is now the second-largest discount retailer following Walmart in the United States.

Formerly Dayton’s Dry Goods Company was founded in 1902 by George Draper Dayton, the first Target discount store was opened in 1962.

The name “Target” originated from Dayton’s publicity director, Stewart K. Widdess, and was intended to prevent consumers from associating the new discount store chain with the department store.
